Protecting Your Camera at the beach

Between white sands and turquoise waters, frolicking children and foaming waves, beaches offer the vacationing photographer a magnificent palette. But fear of damage from sand, salt water and wind often means that the new digital camera stays tucked away. You certainly have to be careful with your equipment at the beach, but for goodness sake, use it! These pointers will help keep your investment safe while it captures your escape from the Canadian winter.

Clean Your Hands

Grimy hands are the most common cause of camera contamination. If you’ve been swimming, rinse them with fresh water and dry carefully before picking up your camera, and make sure you’ve brushed all the sand off as well.

Clean Your Camera

After a day at the beach, use a soft cloth to wipe down the camera. Gently brush away any sand that has become lodged. Also, shake out your camera bag or case, and consider keeping a few desiccant sachets in it to keep things dry (raid your vitamin containers for them).
