Anatomy of a Photograph
We hear the basic rules of photography (compose using the rule of thirds, feature a prominent foreground, expose for highlights) over and over, but it can be hard to apply them in the field. Situations unfold quickly, and suddenly we find ourselves throwing theory out the window and clicking madly.
To help make the connection between theory and practice, I have deconstructed this photo—taken from a raft on British Columbia’s Kootenay River during spring flood—and pointed out the features that make it work.
