Silver’s Steakhouse (Silver’s Steakhouse 1060 Pasqua St. N., Regina; 306-775-5888; Open daily from 4 p.m., brunch from 10 )

THE OUTCOME OF this year’s Labour Day Classic on August 31 at Taylor Field in Regina is anyone’s guess. But one thing is certain: Saskatchewan Roughriders wide receiver Matt Dominguez knows where to celebrate—or sulk—with a great steak and a stiff drink after the big game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Locally owned Silver’s Steakhouse, opened in February, welcomes diners through heavy wooden doors that lead to an elegant dining room done in a classic steakhouse style: muted colours, dim lights and lots of rich wood. The restaurant only serves government-certified Sterling Silver grade steak—the top 10 per cent of the AAA grade. Silver’s is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood, says Dominguez, who lives nearby. Six years into his career with the Riders, this native Texan now calls Regina home, a rarity among Canadian Football League import players. Dominguez appreciates Silver’s welcoming attitude, despite the swish décor. “You’re going to have a good experience and a good meal, but it’s not an exclusive club that you have to be a part of to get in.”

DOOR

“Friday and Saturday nights, you’ll have a two-hour wait. The last time we came, the bar and lobby were packed.”

DÉCOR

“I like that you still have a private feeling because of the high-back booths. Maybe I’m biased because people sometimes try to get an autograph and I’m just trying to have dinner with my wife.”

DRESS

“It’s a steakhouse. You’re paying for the atmosphere also. This is one of those places where you’re going to want to look nice because your entrée is definitely going to look nice.”

DISH

“The pork tenderloin. I’m not a chef, but the spices that they make it with always stick out. It was so much better than I expected.”

DRINK

“I will take some flak for this because I’m a football player and we’re supposed to drink beer. But the Hpnotiq martini is a great drink—not the most manly looking drink, but it tastes great and you gotta go by taste.”
