Humber Valley Resort

Deer Lake, Newfoundland

Forget what you think you may know about golf in Newfoundland—it’s now home to one of the game’s Canadian crown jewels.

Showcasing the talents of marquee Canadian architect Doug Carrick, the 7,200-yard River Course at Humber Valley Resort, just outside Deer Lake, meanders through the mountainous peaks and valleys of western Newfoundland, boasting spectacular close-up views of the plodding Humber River, picturesque Deer Lake and the robust landscape of The Rock.

In true resort-golf style, Humber Valley features generous landing areas, persistent elevation changes—there’s nary a flat fairway to be found—and broad but undulating greens. Some 105 bunkers stand sentry around the property, many of them bordered by fescue and rock outcrops to punish the truly errant golf shot.

Humber Valley has attracted no shortage of international attention, winning best-international and best-new accolades from Golf and S coreGolf magazines, as well as a host of attention from the golf media in Europe—something rarely afforded Canadian courses.

GREEN FEES Play from $100 for peak-season weekends to $50 in the off-season. Carts are between $10 and $20, depending on time of year and time of day. It’s possible to walk Humber Valley, but not recommended—there are some pretty insurmountable hills between holes.
