With that in mind, read on for 60 of the newest attractions, restaurants, hotels, spas and more in your favourite WestJet destinations—some recently opened, others just about to, and all of them sure to freshen up your travel plans this year
Atlantis unveils its new water park this month. The 63-acre Aquaquest is the largest of its kind in the Caribbean and features interconnecting pools, slides and rivers, all buoyed by a 71-foot Power Tower and its four separate adrenaline-inducing waterslides (atlantis.com).
Next month, Atlantis opens Dolphin Cay, a new dolphin interaction facility on Paradise Island. The facility will be home to 17 adopted dolphins rescued from the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Katrina (atlantis.com).
The private island of Chub Cay, long popular with big game fishing aficionados and only a 12-minute plane or helicopter ride from Nassau, has opened its 20,000-square foot clubhouse this month as part of a wider, 220-acre resort project complete with golf courses, a casino and a marina that opened last June (chubcay.com). —TG
The Bahamian resort boom includes the smaller islands as well. The Bimini Bay Resort and Casino unveiled a 96-room resort last summer on North Bimini island which includes condos, rental homes and treehouses, and an offshore marina. There are imminent plans to roll out a luxury hotel, spa, golf course and casino as well (biminibayresort.com). —TG
ST. JOHN’S
East meets East at Basho Japanese Fusion on Duckworth. Linger over a lychee martini upstairs, or dive into salmon tartar in sesame infusion in the upscale dining room. Newfoundland never fished like this (709-576-4600). —SM
Asia continues to woo the St. John’s palate at Shanghai on Water St. From the décor to the dumplings, this is the true Chinese. Bring your own fork if you need it (709-753-2378). —SM
A fish-wrapper this is not. The Scope, the city’s new alternative weekly, launched late last summer and is quickly becoming an authority on arts, entertainment and offbeat news from across the province (thescope.ca). —SM
