Ska might be largely associated with ’80s acts like Madness and subsequent ska-punk offshoots, but this Jamaican precursor to reggae has a much more colourful history. Vancouver Island has developed a strong ska scene and their annual party pays tribute to all its tributaries with an eclectic lineup, including Mexican ska-pop stars Mama Pulpa, Louisiana reggae act Outlaw Nation and local gypsy-ska courtesy of Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra.

THE CROWD Jamaican expats, college kids in hemp hats and pierced punks prone to bouncing.

DON’T MISS Paapa Wastik, a Rastafarian roots artist all the way from Mt. Zion, Ghana.

TICKETS PLEASE Free in Market Square; club prices to be announced.
