Rookie broadcaster and hockey heroine Cassie Campbell

After a blizzard stranded Hockey Night in Canada’s Harry Neale in Buffalo, New York, last October, two-time Olympic Gold medalist and former national team captain Cassie Campbell was tapped to replace him, becoming the first woman to provide colour commentary for the hallowed institution.

“For my first time, being thrown in with only seven hours to go, I can honestly say that it wasn’t that bad,” she says.

This month brings a couple more icebreakers for Campbell: she’ll be at the Women’s World Championships in Winnipeg—doing coverage on the sidelines, for a change—and will provide rink-side interviews and commentary during her first Stanley Cup playoffs with HNIC.

What has placed more pressure on you: wearing a maple leaf on your jersey or the Hockey Night in Canada logo on your blazer?

Hockey Night in Canada
! When I play hockey, maybe my mom is in the stands; or at a world championships, there’ll be 17,000 people if we fill a building. But it’s hockey, and that’s what I’ve done since I was a little kid. So, broadcasting in front of 2.1 million on your second day on the job—that was definitely more nerve-wracking.
