Learn a little more about the wide range of Canadian artists featured in the eclectic
Big Rock Untapped Volume 1, released in February 2008 by Calgary-based craft brewer Big Rock (bigrockuntapped.com)
Track 01: “Original” —The Zoo
Alt-rock radio disciples may recall, “Weightless,” the ubiquitous (circa 2000) single from front man Bryan Duffy’s previous band, See Spot Run. This quirky, unabashedly grunge- and Bowie-inspired three-piece pop-rock band from Toronto have released one eponymous full-length album—which includes this track—since forming in 2005.

02: “Back on the Road” —Zoë Bentley
Forged from a plucky, heartstring-tugging mould that would make Jewel proud (including a me-and-my-acoustic-guitar-against-the-world back story that began when she left her hometown of Belleville, Ontario, at age 15), this 22-year-old artist’s debut album
Stride has been trumpeted for its mainstream-friendly experimentation and its sweet, soulful textures. Bentley, whose voice sometimes evokes Joss Stone’s, is also the perky, pretty new face of Gibson’s new Goddess guitar.

03: “Let’s Go” —Suzie Mcneil
With talents gained from her musical upbringing, this Toronto native has been performing live for over ten years with top 40s artists including Jeff Healey, Dave Navarro and Pink. In her debut album
Broken and Beautiful released last spring, Mcneil’s upbeat and almost throaty voice is reminiscent of the rosy hued singer who has a similar cute-but-tough girl vibe. Last fall, her hit song “Believe” was picked up by Bell Canada and used to create an “Olympic inspired” music video that will be our national athletes anthem during 2010.

04: “Someone” —Adam James
A modern-day Frank Sinatra, Adam James’ crooning of classic jazz standards with a contemporary pop twist has allowed him to share the stage with jazz giants such as Ray Charles, Tony Bennett and Liza Minelli. Already an award winning singer/songwriter, James’ first yet un-named solo album, created with renowned producer David Pierce (known for his work with Micheal Bublé, Jann Arden and Supertramp) will be released this spring.

A multi-talented artist with an adaptable sound, Steve Pineo has explored funk, blues, country and rock genres and written music for Paul Brandt, Prairie Oyster and Grammy award winning singer Donald Ray Johnson. 07: “Voyage of Discovery” —Kris Demeanor
Led by Kris Demeanor’s multi-pitched voice, Crack Band lives up to it’s name and delivers a head bopping alternative rock track with Cake inspired stylings telling an unusually quirky story-line. Not limited to musical success, Demeanor has shared the stage with Knaan, Ridley Bent and Buck 65 at various spoken word festivals and his music video “ I Have Seen the Future” won an Alberta Centennial Prize for best short film after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007.

09: “Maxine” —Michael Bernard Fitzgerald
About letting go of love prospects gone wrong, “Maxine” is a soulfull acoustic track with keyboard mix that might remind some of the Police. At only 21 Fitzgerald has already been garnering attention locally in his hometown of Calgary, and nationally with his self titled EP released last year.
